A fuel cans (jerrycans) story
over 6 years ago – Tue, Jan 09, 2018 at 05:10:14 PM

I’ve been naive. I thought US fuel depots put in place by US troops would have been made using US jerrycans. That is why the “race for gasoline” mission pack has been planned to include US jerrycans and you have the LS7 - US jerrycan as one of the choices for your free sticks. How ingenuous of me… of course reality is never that simple and sure enough it turns out that this was not the case. Apparently the main Allies bottleneck in supplying the Western front through Atlantic shipping was the availability of space rather than weight and for this reason the US choose to ship rolls of steel sheet instead then ready made jerrycans to UK in preparation for the Normandy invasion. Steel was in critically short supply in UK during the war but British manufacturers were perfectly capable of turning it into jerrycans themselves thus saving lots of precious shipping space. However the British industry had copied and adopted the original German jerrycan design early on, which was universally regarded as superior to the US adaptation, and thus made German style jerrycans for the Allied forces. As a matter of facts, looks closely and you’ll see that even the jerrycans in the period picture I used for the mission pack are actually of the German type!

To confuse things up all vehicles shipped from the US with a complement of two US style jerrycans, so there were always some of them mixed around, and to make matters just that bit more complicated there were in fact two slightly different US design, one with a screw cap used for gas and one with a lever cap made for water...

Well, to make a long story short we have decided we are going to stick to history, so the fuel dumps in the “race for gasoline” mission pack will be using German style jerrycans.

In any case both design will also be available separately very soon, so I have added them both as an option for the free sticks and as a separate add-on in Bakerkit.

resin vs metal figures
over 6 years ago – Thu, Jan 04, 2018 at 12:16:01 PM

As asked, this is a comparison shot of production casts of the same figure (48104) in resin and in metal. Neither has been cleaned and is as you will receive it, with the exception that the metal figure has been undercoat with a grey primer so that the details are more visible. Keep in mind the actual figures are about 35mm high, so any difference won't really be noticeable to the naked eye. Also note that the resin figures, even if are cast in the highest grade of PU on the market, 100% pure and do have a degree of flexibility (feels much like the plastic used by mainstream manufacturers, is not hard and brittle) remain necessarily much more fragile and small details like the rifle barrel here would brake if dropped...

as promised!
